NoteSPECIAL SALE - PART 8: Part eight of my current special sales comprised entirely of exceptional specimens from my private collection, representing highlights of my collecting and dealing career. Another opportunity to acquire outstanding and unique seashells from one of the world’s pre-eminent collections. NOTOVOLUTA KREUSLERAE: I have been fortunate enough to acquire TWO specimens of this great rarity during my conchological career thus far, (the partner to the current specimen having been sold in a previous auction). The Victorian form exhibits a markedly slender and elongate shell, with greatly reduced pattern and peripheral nodes. Some regard this form as an extreme eastern range extension of N. pseudolirata; others, (myself included), as a 'smooth' form of kreuslerae; whilst others apply the name 'rossiterie' to this form. The latter is erroneous, as Brazier clearly states in his original description, (which the holotype bears out), that the spire is 'strongly tuberculated at the angle' - the opposite of the reduced-noded Victorian form. Originally described as a full species by Brazier, (Proc. of the Linn. Soc. of NSW; 22:779), the holotype of N. rossiterie is considered by Wilson & Darragh to be a, (dead-collected), specimen of kreuslerae - a diagnosis with which I concur. Whatever its ultimate taxonomic placement, the Victorian form remains extremely rare, with few specimens being held in the Volutidae collections of the world. Live-collected. Tiny loss to outer apertural lip and a couple of negligible natural lines, otherwise exemplary, and undoubtedly one of the finest known specimens of the Victorian form. A rare opportunity for the dedicated Volutidae specialist to acquire a superb example of this virtually unobtainable form. Size: 79.6 mm (length). Grading: F+++. Data: Off Port Fairy, Victoria, Australia; upon sand substrate; 100-140 m; trawled; 1981. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London.
