| Note | SPECIAL SALE - PART 8: Part eight of my current special sales comprised entirely of exceptional specimens from my private collection, representing highlights of my collecting and dealing career. Another opportunity to acquire outstanding and unique seashells from one of the world’s pre-eminent collections. ZOILA FRIENDI VERCOI: This ultra-large, outstanding specimen was collected by the late Peter Clarkson, (author of ‘Australia’s Spectacular Cowries’), and constituted one of his favourite vercoi from his private collection. (The original hand-written Clarkson label accompanies the specimen.) The principal reason, (apart from its beauty), as to why this specimen was so coveted by Clarkson, is that it represents the solid, heavy, DEEP-WATER form, of which very few were collected, as it requires the diver to descend to a depth of over 50 m in their quest, which, given that one has but a few minutes to spend searching the substrate at such depth, and that these shells are naturally elusive, resulted in very few examples being found, (fewer still in GEM quality as the current specimen). Ultra-big size. Hypermature, with great weight to size ratio. Incredibly beautiful margins of deep yellowish cream, with multitudinous chocolate maculae, interspersed with bluish lavender maculae upon the columellar side. A rare vercoi for the connoisseur. Size: 91.1 mm (length). Grading: Gem. Data: Off South-West coast of Westall Island, Alexander Bay, Esperance, Western Australia, Australia; upon granite reef substrate, upon blue sponge at base of boulder; 52 m; dived; 1995.
