Note | EXTRA SPECIAL SALE - PART 7: Part seven of my current extra special sales comprised entirely of exceptional specimens from my private collection, representing highlights of my collecting and dealing career. Another opportunity to acquire outstanding and unique seashells from one of the world’s pre-eminent collections. HALIOTIS IRIS: An outstanding ultra-large specimen, from the 'old days' of collecting. Exceptionally rich and atypically beautiful interior colours. In a detail of the current specimen, (above right image), one may readily discern 'Les Nymphéas' of Monet, (e.g., the large c.1920 canvas at the Museum of Modern Art in New York). Extremely difficult to get this size and quality now. Typical encrustation to exterior, left in its natural state. For the Haliotidae specialist; collector of big sized shells; or admirer of exquisite natural beauty. Size: 158.1 mm (longest dimension). Grading: F+++. Data: Cook Strait, off Owhiro Bay, Wellington, New Zealand; upon reef substrate; 6-12 m; dived; 1982. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
