Note | EXTRA SPECIAL SALE - PART 6: Part six of my extra special sales comprised entirely of exceptional specimens from my private collection, representing highlights of my collecting and dealing career. Another opportunity to acquire outstanding and unique seashells from one of the world’s pre-eminent collections. NOTOCYPRAEA COMPTONI: This is the ONLY specimen I have ever handled of this highly unusual colour form: pure ivory dorsum, with nebulous pale fawn marginal maculae, and a pure white ventrum. Its marginal maculae and ivory dorsum, (as opposed to uniform white), separate it from casta, but it does not fall into any of the more generally encountered subspecies. It may perhaps represent a rare subspecies of which I have had no previous direct experience, and I therefore leave it to the advance Notocypraea specialist to determine its ultimate taxonomic placement. Hypermature labral margin. Size: 20.8 mm (length). Grading: Gem. Data: Lacepede Bay, Kingston SE, South Australia, Australia; upon rock reef substrate, under slab amongst algae and seaweeds at outer reef fringe during extreme seasonal low tide; 1984. |
