Note | EXTRA SPECIAL SALE - PART 6: Part six of my extra special sales comprised entirely of exceptional specimens from my private collection, representing highlights of my collecting and dealing career. Another opportunity to acquire outstanding and unique seashells from one of the world’s pre-eminent collections. SEMICASSIS PYRUM SPECTABILIS: A large and superb specimen, exhibiting 'golden' substrate-influenced colour, and a dramatic accent of chestnut at the siphonal canal. NOTE: Often mispelled as spectabile, the suffix '-is' is designated in Iredale's original description. (Another interesting feature arises from a reading of the original description: the form offered here is typically regarded as spectabilis, although Iredale makes it plain that, in spectabilis the shell 'is much thinner, and has ... a double peripheral keel'. This description accords more with the form generally regarded as niveum. The type specimen should be examined at some point by a Cassidae specialist.) Size: 68.7 mm (length). Grading: F+++. Data: Off Eden, New South Wales, Australia; upon mud/sand substrate; 120-160 m; trawled; 1983. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
