Note | EXTRA SPECIAL SALE - PART 6: Part six of my extra special sales comprised entirely of exceptional specimens from my private collection, representing highlights of my collecting and dealing career. Another opportunity to acquire outstanding and unique seashells from one of the world’s pre-eminent collections. ALTIVASUM FLINDERSI: A particularly beautiful incarnation of the rare orange South Australian form of this highly sought after endemic Australian species. Typically these shells are uniform orange, but the current example exhibits a narrow spiral band of ivory at the whorl periphery to striking aesthetic effect. The South Australian form always exhibits greatly reduced spines, and is much smaller upon maturity than examples from farther West. Pure white, porcellaneous apertural interior. Superb overall state of preservation, with nothing but a little typical minimal erosion to apex. Exceptionally and painstakingly cleaned, with no coralline encrustation. Size: 112.5 mm (length). Grading: F+++; w/o. Data: Off the Southern end of McLaren Point, Port Lincoln, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, Australia; upon sand/rubble substrate near reef, amongst sponges and algae; 32 m; dived; 1992. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
