NameZoila thersites friendii hybrid - Stunning Shell !!! , Gaskoin, 1849
Size72.2 mm
LocalitySouth of Israelite Bay
NoteI gave a talk at COA this year sharing the impressions I had gained through our ROV activity on the evolution of direct developing species in southern Western Australia. Prior to my collecting shells with the ROV I believed that our coastline in the past had been similar to what it is today and the variation we see reflects onshore and lateral zonation due to depth and environmental conditions. This did not fit with what we were finding with the ROV so out of interest I used our vessels plotting system to delineate the habitat was available to these animals in the past. I found that sea levels were much lower in the recent past than today and our coastline was very different during ice ages. Species were split into distinct and isolated populations for considerable periods of time then re-merge during short inter-glacial periods. I believe this readily explains the variation we see today and that many species forms still retain the morphological characteristics of those isolated populations. Should anyone have interest in my views I would be happy to email a copy of my talk. This particular shell was collected in 90 metres of water south of Israelite Bay and to the east of Salisbury Island. At this location we found normal vercoi and candida which I believe are the descendants of a west to east migration from the Augusta area. We also found thersites like shells which I believe represents Great Australian Bight gene pool that has migrated in a westerly direction. This particular shell is one from this location that exhibits that morphology. It has significant nacre loss, DEAD COLLECTED SHELL.
