Note | EXTRA SPECIAL SALE - PART 6: Part six of my extra special sales comprised entirely of exceptional specimens from my private collection, representing highlights of my collecting and dealing career. Another opportunity to acquire outstanding and unique seashells from one of the world’s pre-eminent collections. CYPRAEA CERVUS: Rarely does a shell stand so far above almost every other known example in quality as does the current specimen, but for such a shell to also possess the merit of the world's most coveted collection provenance is an exceedingly rare phenomenon. Renowned as the greatest ever diver of Australian specimen shells, it is little known that the late Peter Clarkson, (author of Australia's Spectacular Cowries), undertook a special expedition to Florida, USA, to specifically dive for Spondylus americanus - a personal favourite species. Clarkson was, (of course), successful in collecting many superb specimens of americanus, and, as an incredible bonus, found this extraordinary specimen of Cypraea cervus. The specimen was collected upon the wreck of the 'Miller Lite', a 186 foot freighter, sunk off Pompano Beach upon the 17th of May, 1987. As the Cypraeidae specialist will know, such big cervus are prone to many growth irregularities and poor deposition of pattern. Almost unbelievable in its perfection with regards both quality and pattern, the current specimen would undoubtedly rate as one of the BEST cervus known, and it is impossible to convey via images the splendour of this specimen 'in the hand'. Its perfection is, (to apply a word I rarely use, but warranted in this case), breathtaking. Ultra-big size. Ultra-rich, completely stable colour. Magnificent vivid lavender apertural interior. Dorsum covered with a plethora of perfectly formed, equidistanly dispersed, circular dorsal maculae. Perfectly formed mantle line. Resplendent ultra-thick gloss. A hand-written Clarkson label has become much sought in its own right, (the original Clarkson label accompanies the specimen), yet to obtain a Clarkson label in connection with such an outstanding non-Australian shell is a unique prize. A treasured specimen from my private collection, to be passed now only to another connoisseur of the world's very BEST seashells. Size: 111.4 mm (length). Grading: Gem(+). Data: Off Pompano Beach, (North of Fort Lauderdale), Florida, USA; upon silty iron substrate, amongst sponges and corals; 42 m; dived; 1992. Provenance: 1. Peter Clarkson private collection; Port Lincoln, South Australia, Australia; 2. JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
