NameMauritia arabica asiatica f. gibba - THE TANK......MASSIVE , Coen, 1949
Size79 mm
LocalityLaem Namtok, Gulf of Thailand
NoteMASSIVE HUMPEDBACK......This is the most awe-inspiring of all 'gibba' I have come across, the largest and heaviest, and certainly the most gerontic. And the final super-duper piece I'm offering. A colleague likes to call this piece THE TANK, not just because of its breathtakingly massive round size, prodigious weight (like a brick) and ultra-swollen margins, but jovially because he likens it to having been in the front lines of engagement. The images just don't capture how expanded the margins are, or just how raised the dorsum is, like a bowler hat. Dark spotting to both margins. The base is somewhat concave in shape. A very old over-calloused shell, the specimen has blemishes, yes, and the front half of the dorsum is overcast with a creamy grey algae, yet glossy. This all adds up to a certain aura or mystique. And an absolute must for any advanced collection, when debate over the algae can be rejected in favour of out-and-out uniqueness. A truly elder giant that has seen it all during its lifespan. Grade: F+ (harsh, but for the most picky of collectors). Provenance: from my own collection. Dived at 2-4m depth, live taken and found crawling around deep within large rock crevices and under ledges. Koh Tao, Laem Namtok, Gulf of Thailand, Thailand.
