Note | EXTRA SPECIAL SALE - PART 4: Part four of my extra special sales comprised entirely of exceptional specimens from my private collection, representing highlights of my collecting and dealing career. Another opportunity to acquire outstanding and unique seashells from one of the world’s pre-eminent collections. CHICOREUS LONGICORNIS: A superb specimen of the real longicornis. Specimens of the far more common cervicornis, (especially juvenile examples), are often misidentified as longicornis, but the former is readily separated from the latter by its bifurcated principal spines, the latter having unbranched, relatively straight spines. Very high quality for this usually rough, deep-water trawled species, with exemplary preservation of the elongate spines, badly damaged in the majority of examples. Collected during the legendary 1980s Queensland trawls, and now obtainable only from old collections. Size: 47.8 mm (length). Grading: F+++. Data: Gulf of Carpentaria, off Aurukun, Queensland, Australia; upon mud/sand/rubble substrate; 200-300 m; trawled; 1982. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
