Family | Cypraeidae |
Name | Zoila friendii - Hydrid with kostini , Gray, 1831 |
Size | 76.1 mm |
Locality | Margaret River, WA |
Note | In depths of 100 to 130 metres of water off the SW corner of Western Australia we are finding "friendii" with very diverse shape and coloration. Some are very friendii like in color and shape whilst others show kostini like features. I interpret this as being a hybrid zone where various gene pools have split and re-merged around drowned ice age shore lines during past glacial periods. I have taken the liberty of lumping these shells into a broad category of "deep water friendii". This particular shell was collected in 126 metres of water west of Margaret River. It has a sparsely tan speckled dorsum with a cream base. In overall shape it is vercoi like with prominent siphons like friendii. It is significantly larger and with a flatter base and more prominent siphons that the kostini we find in deeper water. It has a narrow aperture with full teeth similar to jeaniana. DEAD COLLECTED SHELL WITH SOME GLOSS LOSS. |
