Item | # 0002065901 | Family | Volutidae | Name | Scaphella dubia kieneri , Clench, W.J., 1946 |
Size | 92.8 mm |
Locality | W. Florida |
Note | F+ Natural lip nearly perfect. Scaphella dubia dubia... Scaphella dubia kieneri... Still seems to be some disagreement. Poppe & Goto say:
It is difficult to decide whether the shell of S.dubia dubia belongs to an adult or young animal. Most ofthe specimens measure between 100 and 130 mm in length. The world record size measures 238 mm and is in the Goto Coll.
Shell characteristics: Light-weighted, thin and fragile. The siphonal canal is almost always coloured with a dark chocolate brown, and the protoconch has an extremely large and extended cakcarella. Comparison: The shell of S. dubia dubia becomes larger, is lighter in weight and is not so solid as in all the other subspecies. The glassy callus, covering much of the shell in S. dubia georgiana and S. dubia schmitti is almost absent in S. dubia dubia. The protoconch has a much more developed calcarella and the aperture is wider.
Remarks: Clench designated small shells as neotypes for S. dubia. These are young specimens ofthe species formerly called S. kieneri Clench, 1946. S. dubia, S. dubia kieneri and S. kieneri are all names used for long, slender forms from the Gulf of Mexico.
