Columna columna (O. F. Müller, 1774) Príncipe Island, São Tomé and Príncipe | 62.4 mm RARE ENDEMIC SPECIES – NATURALLY SINISTRAL – EXCELLENT SPECIMEN A beautiful and very well-preserved specimen of Columna columna from Príncipe Island, São Tomé and Príncipe, measuring 62.4 mm. This striking terrestrial gastropod is a naturally sinistral species, with the shell coiled to the left as a normal characteristic of its morphology. Columna columna is a rare endemic snail of the Gulf of Guinea oceanic islands, and is particularly associated with the remarkable terrestrial malacofauna of São Tomé and Príncipe. The species has a long history in malacology: C. columna was among the large land snails from the Gulf of Guinea that reached Europe in the 18th century and was described by Otto Friedrich Müller in 1774. This specimen comes specifically from Príncipe Island, one of the two principal islands of the archipelago, and is presented in excellent condition, with the shell exceptionally well preserved. A highly desirable species for collectors of Achatinidae, African terrestrial molluscs and island endemics, particularly attractive for its natural sinistral coiling and restricted geographical origin.
