Note

The LARGEST and FINEST specimen of the JES Collection, from the ‘old days’ of extreme deep-water South African trawling. Very RARE QUALITY for such enormous size, and for this typically rough species, with none of the growth damage seen in the majority of giant examples. Virtual perfection. Very mininal smoothing to apertural lip, carried out as a matter of course during the 1980s. Retention of enormous original operculum. It is extremely difficult to obtain a specimen of this size and quality now. Data: Off Durban, Natal, KwaZulu, South Africa; upon sand/mud substrate; 250-450 m; trawled; 1981. Size: 109.7 mm (longest dimension). Grading: Fine+++; w/o. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne.
