Lovely multi-toned specimen with broad open wings, moderate weight and exceptional appearance. Amazing condition for a murex shell from this location on the central California coast. The shell exhibits sculptured varices showing accentuated terminal fluting on the flowing varices. Visible are gradated shades of russet and camel brown pigment gradations of the body whorl flowing on the varices and transitioning to antique white varix edges complemented by beige infusions. The leading edges are varix faces are antique infused shades of alternating pastel russet brown blotches. The shell has an intact spire, perfect anterior siphonal canal and aperture lip. Collected by Scuba diver at 7-10 meters on sand at the base of a rock reef between kelp forests off Cayucos, central California by Mike Magnum in 2016. The specimen does exhibit a subtle worn protoconch and some wear and minor abrasion on the older varices. Grade: F+++.
