In the past while collecting Cypraea jeaniana aurata, we have focused on the areas west of Bernier Island and west of Coral Bay. Both areas produce very attractive but different shells. Coral bay shells are very rotund being almost round in some cases. The dorsal background colour tends to be very white. Shells collected west of Bernier Island are different in shape and a more elongate and have more prominent siphons. Until recently we had done little searching in the 180km section of habitat between the two locations. Reasons for this is the area tends to have strong currents with tidal movement out of Shark Bay, and it is remote to our home port of Denham. In June 2026 we made a concerted effort into searching the area west of Cape Cuvier. We found the aurata assemblage to be different with the bulk of the shells being transitional between the Bernier and Coral Bay shells and a small percentage being quite different and exceptionally attractive with black rather than orange lateral spots. I have taken the liberty of referring to them as “cuvierensis”. The balance of the typical aurata varies with characteristics of both the Bernier and Coral Bay shells but not to the extent of both forms. To distinguish between more slender and more bulbous shells, I intend to refer to them as Cypraea aurata – Quobba and Cypraea aurata – Cape Cuvier respectively. The offered shell is bulbous, heavy, and flared with a tan spotted dorsum, cream base and gold lateral spots and siphon trim. It was ROV collected from a white funnel sponge in 172 metres of water west of Cape Cuvier, Western Australia during June 2026. Graded Fine++ due to a small dorsal growth interruption at the top of the dorsum.
