NoteDuring May 2026 while we were relocating our vessel from Geraldton to Shark Bay we found this huge specimen buried in sand next to a reef. It was collected from 54 metres of water west of Kalbarri to the north of Geraldton. The shell has a lovely mauve lower valve and the upper valve has the appearance of birds flying into a sunset. Tom Iredale described West Coast fumatus as preissiana in 1949. The distinguishing feature being by a fine radial grove that runs down the centre of the large ribs on the basal valve. The shell has a couple of chips in it's lower value that resulted during the collection process with the ROV.
