NoteAn OUTSTANDING ULTRA-LARGE specimen, of RARE QUALITY for such size, exhibiting exceedingly well-developed varical digitations, with markedly spatulate terminations, in an exemplary state of preservation. Although somewhat available during the 1980s, extremely large, high quality specimens have always been difficult to obtain, and now come principally from choice old collections. A zamboi for the connoisseur. (AESTHETIC NOTE: I have greatly esteemed this particular specimen, as, viewed from a dorsal perspective, its varical structure always called to mind the Nike of Samothrace, with its outstretched wings, as viewed when standing before this immortal achievement of the ancient world.) Data: Off Talima, Olango, Cebu, Central Visayas, Philippines; upon coarse coral sand/rubble substrate, amongst coral reef; 15-20 m; dived; 1996. Size: 55.1 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne.
