| Item | # 0004174782 | | Family | Pectinidae | | Name | Manupecten nolani - Coral Orange , T. Cossignani, 2022 |
| Size | 75 mm |
| Locality | Fortunate Isles of Macaronesia |
| Note | Punta de Teno, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. Type locality of the species. 28°20’14.17”N, 16°54’28.51”W; 17 m depth; collected by a diver, October 2024. - | - Recently described Canary Islands endemic, distinguished from Manupecten pesfelis by its finer, more numerous radiating ribs and overall more delicate radial sculpture. This large adult specimen displays an uncommon flame-orange colour form. Based on currently reviewed material, vivid orange specimens appear exceptionally scarce in comparison with the usual brownish forms, possibly occurring at an approximate ratio of 1:45 or lower. - | - Exterior deep orange to coral-orange. Fine radiating sculpture remains visible across most of the shell surface. Although one side is exceptionally clean, the specimen remains uncleaned and retains natural encrustations on one valve, including red coralline attachment and additional calcareous epibiont patches. These encrustations are typical of narrow crevice habitats, where shell surfaces may be exposed to localized overgrowth and limited natural cleaning by water movement or sediment transport. For its size, this is an exceptionally clean example. Apart from one single needle-like puncture, no borings are visible. - | - Interior surfaces clean, lustrous, and well preserved. Shell margins and overall outline remain intact and well developed. At 75 mm, the shell is exceptionally large for material currently referred to Manupecten nolani, exceeding the 40–50 mm size range reported in the original description and surpassing the largest cited paratype, paratype 4, at 63.62 mm. In combination with its well-developed radial sculpture, this unusual size makes the identification tentative, and attribution to Manupecten pesfelis cannot be excluded without direct comparison with large Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic material. Its collection from the type locality of M. nolani gives the specimen particular reference value for assessing morphological variation within Canary Islands Manupecten. - | - Overall an outstanding institutional reference specimen, notable for its exceptional size, rare flame-orange coloration, collection from the type locality, and taxonomic relevance for the study of Canary Islands Manupecten. |
