NoteA large and beautiful specimen, exhibiting the richest colour and most elaborate pattern I have ever encountered in this RARE, ENDEMIC CORAL SEA species. Few specimens were ever collected from this locality, due to the difficulty of accessing the locality, and no fresh specimens will ever be available in future. Extremely solid and heavy for size. Exemplary quality for the species. Beautiful mottled exterior pattern. Rare retention of original operculum. The specimen was formeerly in the renowned Ellis collection, and the original 1990s Ellis label accompanies the specimen. NOTE: The species is the ONLY surviving descendant of a group from the Eocene, (c.56,000,000 years ago), which lived in the Paris basin region of the Tethyan range. Recent studies have shown that G. gourmyi is almost identical to its ancient relatives. Data: Saumarez Reefs, Australian Coral Sea Islands Territory, Australia; upon rock reef substrate, upon boulder, at night; 7 m; dived; 1995. Size: 61.2 mm. Grading: Fine+++; w/o. Provenance: 1) R. I. Ellis; 2) JES Collection; London / Melbourne.
