Coluzea distephanotis - ULTRA-RARE; LIVE COLL. , Melvill, 1891
Size
63.5 mm, w/o
Locality
Australia
Note
An ULTRA-RARE, very large, LIVE-COLLECTED specimen, from a newly discovered far off-shore, extreme deep-water population off northern Australia. RARE QUALITY for the species, and collection method. Almost never seen at this level of quality, typically with substantial damage to peripheral spines, which are often almost absent. Mammillate protoconch intact, (typically lost during the trawling process), and retention of original operculum – both very important for the connoisseur. A first offering on the world market of this exciting discovery from this new locality, and a rare opportunity for the Columbariidae specialist, or admirer of truly exquisite seashells. Family: Columbariidae. Data: Timor Sea, off Melville Island, Tiwi Islands, Northern Territory, Australia; upon sand substrate; 350-450 m; trawled; 2023. Size: 63.5 mm. Grading: Fine+++; w/o. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne.
