NoteAt virtually 200 mm, this MAGNIFICENT GIANT approaches the known species size limit, and is of the FINEST possible QUALITY for such enormous size. The specimen was collected half a century ago, during the ‘old days’ of Galapagos diving and availability. No fresh specimens have been collected for many years, as the region is now protected under the Galápagos Marine Reserve, and no fresh specimens will be available in future. Yet, even prior to the establishment of the marine park, examples of this monumental size were only found during the early years of Galápagos diving activity. Thus, high quality specimens of this gigantic size have now become extremely sought after ‘collector’s items’, obtainable only upon the very rare occasions when deaccessioned from the world’s pre-eminent collections. Ultra-rich colour: deep purplish red, with accents of whoite and lemon towards the umbos. Ultra-clean, with virtually no erosion. The specimen was formerly in the renowned Edwin Spurr Hall collection, of New York – one of the most important US collections. A HIGHLY IMPORTANT JES Collection specimen, now to be passed to an advanced Pectinidae specialist, or dedicated collector of giant-sized shells. Data: Bahía Isabel, Fernandina, Galápagos Islands; upon rock reef substrate, in sand channel between reef; 15-20 m; dived; November 1976. Size: 200 mm (longest dimension). Grading: Fine++++. Provenance: 1) Edwin Spurr Hall, New York; 2) JES Collection; London / Melbourne.
