Family | Cypraeidae |
Name | Zoila rosselli - Minueta Form !!! , Cotton, 1948 |
Size | 42.1 mm |
Locality | Kalbarri, WA |
Note | On our last voyage relocating our vessel from Geraldton to Shark Bay, we had good weather and had time to have a look around the area to the west of the Southern Zuytdorp Cliffs and northwest of Kalbarri. It became obvious that in addition to praeclara, both rosselli and marginata are quite different to specimens collected from other areas. The rosselli are very small with sizes varying from 38 to 45mm and are very black with narrow dorsal window slots. We have found a few black specimens with no dorsal widows at all. They are absolutely gorgeous little shells. Given they are quite different and restricted this area I have decided to use the form name "minueta" to refer to them. This small crabbed shell was collected from a sponge garden in 80 metres of water north west of Kalbarri. The shell has intact siphons and has some nacre scratches on it's labial side and dorsum. The white mark on it's dorsum is due to a flake of nacre being dislodged. It is a stunning little shell !!! |
