Note | Argonauta argo are truly a
wonder of nature. They are the
largest of the paper nautilus
with the females growing to
sizes in excess of 200mm while
males attain sizes of up to
20mm. They are the external
shell of a free-swimming
oceanic cephalopod or pelagic
octopus. In early winter, the
female secretes up to 50,000
embryos in the keel of the shell
which acts as an egg case.
They feed on plankton and jelly
fish and are in turn predicated
upon by pelagic fish such as
dolphin fish, tuna, and bill fish.
Occasionally they wash up on
our south coast during and after
severe winter storms. The
Chinese name for the species
translates to “White Sea Horse
Nest”. They are an incredible
structure. This specimen is a
good size nautilus shell beach
collected at Windy Harbour,
east of Augusta in very exceptional
condition. It is as GEM as they get !!! |
