Note | One very interesting specimen of the parasitic isopod parasite Ceratothoa gaudichaudii. This parasite settles in the oral cavity of some fishes in the southeastern Pacific, eating and replacing the tongue of the fishes, in particular in Trachyurus murphyi and in some salmons. This female gravid specimen was collected from the mouth of a Trachyurus murphyi fished offshore Caldera, northern Chile. It is currently whole preserved in 96% ethanol. The World Register of Marine Species cites this species as "taxon inquirendum", and it may represent a cluster of different species. This is your opportunity to obtain a very rare large parasitic crustacean and a very interesting natural history item, one of the few fish mouth parasites known. You can see an image of how they live insides fishes mouths in the next link: https://wp-assets.futurism.com/2013/11/fish-tongue-louse.jpg |
