FamilyPectinidae
NameDelectopecten forsterianus - EXTREME DEEP-WATER; RARE , Powell, 1933
Size11 mm
LocalityAustralia
NoteThis tiny, ultra-delicate, translucent, extreme deep-water species, is one of the world's rarest pectens, for four reasons: 1) the extreme depth of its habitat; 2) the fact that this habitat is so infrequently fished; 3) the extreme delicacy of the species, which never survives a deep-sea trawl, unless protected by its host coral; 4) the time and effort involved in searching the trawl spoil for such a tiny, elusive shell. Concentric bands of minute lamellae. The specimen was obtained during an 'on-season' of benthic fish harvesting off Kangaroo Island at a depth of 1,000-1,100 m. No commercial fishing is permitted now inside the marine park, so it is unlikely that fresh specimens will ever again be available from this locality. This rare species is also recorded from New Zealand, so this Kangaroo Island example may represent a new range extension for this species, (if indeed it does not represent a different form or species). Undoubtedly lacking in almost all of the world's pecten collections. Almost never offered upon the world market. A rare opportunity for the pecten specialist. Size: 11 mm (longest dimension). Grading: F++++. Data: Off southern coast of Kangaroo Island, South Australia, Australia; upon mud/sand/detritus substrate; 1,000-1,100 m; trawled; 1997. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London.
