Note | SPECIAL FULGETRUM FEATURE: This sale features a selection of rare and unusual forms from my private collection of fulgetrum variants. A unique opportunity for the Volutidae specialist. SPECIMEN 3. Verco's varietal names provide a useful identification of the various pattern forms of this highly variable, endemic southern Australian species, however, they have become rather muddled and misapplied by many collectors and dealers over the years, whom have not taken the trouble to consult the original source documents. To clarify the lunulisligata form, I quote the following salient points from Verco's original description of this variety: 'two spirals of large crescentic or arrow-headed spots, with flames at the suture'. Superb rich pink, with chestnut markings. One small, typical axial growth disruption upon an early whorl. Perfect outer apertural lip and siphonal canal. Note: The form name is often mispelled as 'lunisligata', when the correct spelling is 'lunulisligata', (see Verco's original description). Size: 106.8 mm (length). Grading: F+++. Data: Off Evans Island, Nuyts Archipelago, South Australia, Australia; upon sand substrate; 60-120 m; trawled; 1995. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
