Note | SPECIAL FULGETRUM FEATURE: This sale features a selection of rare and unusual forms from my private collection of fulgetrum variants. A unique opportunity for the Volutidae specialist. SPECIMEN 2. An exceptional specimen of a rare and beautiful deep-water form. Patternless, save sporadic small spots of pale caramel, occurring in a spiral upon the early whorls. Remainder of shell uniform rich pink, with bluish grey protoconch. Typical minor trawl loss to siphonal canal. Perfect, fully mature outer apertural lip. This patternless, pink deep-water form is often erroneously referred to by many as 'orca', although orca itself is now rightly considered a synonym of fulgetrum. Size: 125.9 mm (length). Grading: F+++. Data: Great Australian Bight, off Ceduna, South Australia, Australia; upon sand substrate; 140-160 m; trawled; 1992. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
