Note | EXCEPTIONAL JES PRIVATE COLLECTION SPECIMEN: This sale includes five exceptional specimens from my private collection, representing a rare opportunity to create your own price for extremely rare and high-value shells. ZOILA ELUDENS: One of the jewels of my private collection, this emormous and outstanding eludens was collected by the late Peter Clarkson, (author of ‘Australia’s Spectacular Cowries’), and the original, hand-written Clarkson label accompanies the specimen. Clarkson collected many friendi, thersites, venusta, and marginata, but a giant PC-collected eludens is a rarity. The specimen is of the monumental 'oceanic' form, a term used by Australian Zoila collectors to indicate these ultra-heavy giants from the 'old days' of availability. These fabulous shells, with their incredible solidity, weight to size ratio, and ultra-expansive ventra, are considered the supreme expression of the species, and have become highly coveted by the international Zoila collecting community. In addition to the above mentioned merits of this form, the current specimen exhibits that most important of factors for qualification as exceptional: magnificent colour and pattern - densely and evenly deposited dorsal maculae, encircled by a pronounced pale blue halo - exactly what the connoisseur demands of an outstanding eludens. Absolute perfection, save two, tiny, fully glossed, virtually imperceptible, and utterly negligible sand grains, which are a typical feature of many specimens of this form, coming as they do from high activity waters. The ONLY PC-collected eludens I have to offer. Most Australian Zoila collectors will simply never relinquish such shells, and when they do, the price is extremely high. Size: 67 mm (length). Grading: F++++/Gem. Data: Off 2.5 km North-North-West off North Muiron Island, Muiron Islands, Exmouth, Western Australia, Australia; upon limestone reef substrate, upon limestone sand and sponge tower, upon stalk of large single-leafed orange Sow's Ear sponge, festooned with green and black featherstars; 22 m; dived; 26 May 1996. Provenance: 1. Peter Clarkson private collection, Port Lincoln; 2. JES private collection, Melbourne/London. |
