Item | # 0002233441 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Umbilia hesitata - RARE TASMANIAN FORM , Iredale, 1916 |
Size | 98.6 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | An ultra-large specimen of the now much coveted Tasmanian form, exhibiting the characteristic ultra-rich colour; marked solidity; ivory ventrum; and great weight to size ratio for which the form is known. This ancient example was collected in 1957, so shows its age a little, but remains an extremely impressive example. Although typically with heavy sand/mud inclusions, the current specimen has an absolute minimum of these, lending it a very clean appearance. This particular specimen bears a superficial resemblance to armeniaca brunnea. Almost impossible to obtain now, coming only from old collections. Size: 98.6 mm (length). Grading: F++. Data: Off King Island, New Year Group, Tasmania, Australia; upon mud/sand/detritus substrate; 160-240 m; trawled; 1957. |
