Item | # 0002203338 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Cypraea tigris - QUEENSLAND 'WHITE TIGER' , Linnaeus, 1758 |
Size | 82 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | In the 'old days' of collecting, several coral cay islands of the Great Barrier Reef produced examples of what are locally termed 'white tigers'. The habitats of such forms have long been marine parks, and for decades specimens have been obtainable only from old collections. White and cream ground, with chocolate and café au lait maculae. Note the three, particularly large, ultra-dark chocolate maculae, all of the same size, arrayed in a register upon the labral margin - a beautiful feature of this specimen. For the Cypraeidae, or tigris specialist whose collection yet lacks a Queensland 'white tiger'. Size: 82 mm (length). Grading: F++++. Data: Wilson Island, Capricorn & Bunker Group, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia; upon reef substrate, under coral slab at low tide; 1971. |
