Item | # 0002202454 | Family | Muricidae | Name | Pterynotus acanthopterus - OUTSTANDING WHITE GIANT , (Lamarck, 1816) |
Size | 98.8 mm, w/o |
Locality | Australia |
Note | Almost touching 100 mm, this incredible giant is not only remarkable upon account of its monumental size, but upon account of its being of the 'white' form. One of the BEST 'white' giants I have ever seen in my decades of handling Australian shells. Exemplary state of preservation for this notoriously rough, reef-dwelling form. Expansive varices, exhibiting supremely balanced proportions. Painstakingly cleaned, with only a minimum of encrustation now present, (and could be cleaned further if desired). Definitely for the Muricidae specialist, or collector of giant sized, 'wow factor' shells. Size: 98.8 mm (length). Grading: F++++; w/o. Data: Off Dampier, Western Australia, Australia; upon mud/sand substrate amongst reef; 2-4 m; dived; 1984. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
