Item | # 0002179351 | Family | Buccinidae | Name | Godfreyna torri - NEAR WRS GIANT , Verco, J., 1909 |
Size | 76.3 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | This magnificent specimen is only around 2 mm under the current official World Record Size for this rare and highly sought after, incredibly beautiful, endemic southern Australian species. (Information verified at wrs-shells.com upon 3 May 2019). Fresh-dead-collected, (as is the current official WRS example), yet its colour resembles that of a live-collected specimen: broad spiral bands of orangish apricot and pinkish white, decorated with fine accents of caramel. As with the few other known dead-collected true giants, there is predatory loss to the outer apertural lip, (image available upon request), which is completely hidden in display. An amazing piece of conchology - to witness such size in such a classic and coveted rarity. Bulbous protoconch intact. An extremely impressive shell. Size: 76.3 mm (length). Grading: F+. Data: Off Venus Bay, South Australia, Australia; upon mud/sand substrate, upon low sandy limestone reef, amongst red algal tufts and tall sponges; 40-50 m; trawled; 1999. |
