Size | 214 mm |

Note | This truly magnificent, monumental specimen, comes from the population, fished in the 'old days' of collecting, off Apollo Bay, Victoria, famed for producing the largest and most beautiful specimens of the solid southern form. Ultra-broad form, with ultra-inflated body whorl and widely flaring aperture. Exquisite pale ground of broad spiral bands of orangish and pinkish cream, decorated with a dense, supremely well-formed pattern of the highest aesthetic merit. Perfect, fully mature, markedly thickened, 'rolled' and glossed outer apertural lip. Mammillate protoconch intact. A very special sowerbyi from my private collection for the Volutidae specialist. Size: c.214 mm (length). Grading: F++++. Data: Henty Reef, Apollo Bay, Victoria, Australia; upon reef/rubble substrate; 30-50 m; craypot; 1990. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
