Item | # 0002179341 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Zoila venusta - RARE COLOUR FORM , Sowerby I, 1847 |
Size | 67.8 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | An oustanding specimen of a rare and incredibly beautiful colour form, difficult to adequately describe in words: large, free-form reddish chestnut dorsal maculae across a golden honey ground; margins of bluish cinnamon decorated with pale brown maculae; and terminals of ultra-rich dusky pink, commingled with chocolate. (See terminals of above left image for some indication of their superb rich pink colour.) A small area of predatory fish action, fully healed and glossed during life, is present towards the anterior of the columellar margin - unseen in display, and negligible in connection with the magnificence of this rare form. Detailed image available upon request. (Note: My policy, as is well known, is to offer only the finest quality Zoila, yet sometimes allowances must be made for minor imperfections of nature if we wish to acquire rare or unusual forms, such as the current example.) Size: 67.8 mm (length). Grading: F++. Data: Off Cervantes, Western Australia, Australia; upon reef substrate, upon sponge; 26 m; dived; 1997. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
