Item | # 0002179333 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Zoila friendi thersites contraria - RARE; SPECIAL COLOUR , Iredale, 1935 |
Size | 73.9 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | A highly unusual form, exhibiting a dorsum with greenish tan coalescent maculae, arranged loosely in spiral stripes, across a bluish ground adorned with axial bands of bluish lavender. Yet the most beautuiful aspect of the shell is its margins, especially that of the labral side: bold chocolate maculae upon a rich, yellowish cream ground, and orangish caramel at the terminals. There are 4-5 tiny nacre dots upon the dorsum, probably caused by lost inclusions, but these are of negligible detraction to the overall appearance of the specimen. (Note: My policy, as is well known, is to offer only the finest quality Zoila, yet sometimes allowances must be made for minor imperfections of nature if we wish to acquire rare or unusual forms, such as the current example.) For the advanced Zoila specialist. Size: 73.9 mm (length). Grading: F++. Data: Off Ceduna, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, Australia; upon sand/rubble substrate; 128 m; trawled; 1998. |
