| Note | This is a rare series I have developed over time which illustrates, quite conclusively, the relationship of sophiae to cymbiola. As is readily discernible from the above series, beginning with sophiae on the left, and progressing to cymbiola on the right, the position of the whorl periphery rises, whilst the spire becomes compressed, and the overall form becomes more elongate pyriform; the peripheral spines become longer and more pointed. The colours of the two intermediate shells are particularly beautiful: delicate shades of peach, apricot and orange. Note: 1. The specimen of cymbiola is a small, yet beautiful, example with a thin lip, included for the purpose of completing the series, and could be replaced with a larger specimen; 2. the third specimen from the left has axial growth damage very close to the outer apertural lip, (image available upon request), hidden in display, as illustrated here. Definitely for the advanced Volutidae specialist, for research to determine the true taxonomic position of this complex, and for possible application of an intermediate form or varietal name. Size (length): 67.7-54.4 mm. Grading: F++++-F++. Data: 1. Broome, Western Australia, Australia; upon upon intertidal sandflat at extreme low tide; 1992; 2-3. Timor Sea, off North-western Australia; upon sand substrate; 300-400 m; trawled; 1980s; 4. Flores, Lesser Sunda Islands, Indonesia; upon sand substrate; 40-70 m; trawled; 1990s. |
