Item | # 0002179129 | Family | Volutidae | Name | Livonia roadnightae - ULTRA-RARE FORM , (McCoy, 1881) |
Size | 183.8 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | I am aware of only TWO examples of this exceedingly rare form, coming from an extremely restricted locality during the very 'old days' of collecting, in which the pattern, typically composed of ultra-fine, highly angulate zig zag lines, has been transformed into one of widely-spaced, ultra-broad, wavy axial lines - distinctive enough to warrant an informal variety or form name. Collected fresh-dead from a craypot off the narrow isthmus, (approximately 400 m), connecting the Tasman Peninsula with the Forestier Peninsula in South-East Tasmania, and therefore, from the very southern limit of the species range. This locality has long formed part of the Tasman National Park, in addition to being a World Heritage Site, so no further specimens will ever be available. The locality was a minor fishery region, even at its peak, with very few deep-water shells being collected, hence the extreme rarity of this form. A unique opportunity for an advanced Volutidae specialist to acquire one of the few known specimens of this ultra-rare form. Size: 183.8 mm (length). Grading: F++. Data: Off Eaglehawk Neck, Tasman Peninsula to Forestier Peninsula, Tasmania, Australia; upon reef/sand/rubble substrate, amongst seaweed and sponges; 40-80 m; craypot; 1970. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
