Item | # 0002177552 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Zoila friendi - OUTSTANDING 'GONDOLA' , Gray, 1831 |
Size | 87.4 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | The partner, from my private collection, to the incredible 'gondola' specimen sold in a recent auction. This specimen is just as rostrated as the other, and exhibits darker colour. It is extremely difficult to obtain a friendi of this extreme form with such colour and quality as the current example. Dorsum with ultra-dark, ultra-densely deposited, coalescent chestnut maculae, virtually obscuring the ground. Ultra-dark chestnut-black ventrum. Markedly slender form. Hypermature. Greatly attenuated, recurved terminals. Impossible to get better. The BEST of the best. A treasured shell from my private collection, now to be passed only to another connoisseur of the world's very best seashells. Size: 87.4 mm (length). Grading: Gem. Data: Off Carnac Island, Western Australia, Australia; upon limestone reef substrate, upon sponge; 14 m; dived; 1997. Provenance: JES private collection, Melbourne/London. |
