Item | # 0002165156 | Family | Pectinidae | Name | Mimachlamys spinicostata - RARE FULL PURPLE GIANT , Dijkstra & Beu, 2018 |
Size | 123.5 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | The biggest and BEST full purple giant I have ever handled of this endemic Western Australian species. Full purple is one of the rarest colour forms of this species. Exemplary state of preservation for such an old age, deep-water trawled shell. Described as australis, (Sowerby, 1842); considered by some as a giant synonym of asperrima, (Lamarck, 1819); and only last year elevated to full specific rank by Dijkstra & Beu. Now obtainable only from old collections. An exceptional specimen for the advanced Pectinidae specialist, or collector of 'wow factor' seashells. Size: 123.5 mm (longest dimension). Grading: Gem. Data: Off Carnarvon, Western Australia, Australia; upon sand substrate, amongst sponges; 100-200 m; trawled; 1982. |
