Item | # 0002161404 | Family | Conidae | Name | Conus sculletti - RARE INTACT FINE LIP , Marsh, 1962 |
Size | 39.2 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | A rare specimen of this endemic, deep-water Queensland species, in which the extremely delicate, (dark and translucent), outer apertural lip is INTACT. The only specimen I have ever handled in such a state, as the ultra-fine lip edge is virtually always lost to trawl damage. The preservation of the lip is readily discernible in both of the above images. Exemplary condition for this typically very rough species. Mammillate protoconch intact. Ultra-rich colour and superbly formed, dense pattern. Collected during the legendary 1980s Queensland trawls, and now obtainable only from old collections. Definitely for the Conidae specialist, in order to possess a specimen with, and study the nature of, the ultra-fine outer apertural lip intact. Size: * mm (length). Grading: F+++. Data: Off Cape Moreton, Queensland, Australia; upon sand substrate; 60-120 m; trawled; 1982. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
