Item | # 0002161389 | Family | Volutidae | Name | Cymbiola irvinae - 108.4 mm LEMON YELLOW , Smith, 1909 |
Size | 108.4 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | An extremely large specimen, dead-collected from a craypot, from the very 'old days' of collecting, (at a time when the species was an extreme rarity, known only from a handful of examples), yet of excellent overall quality for a specimen of such advanced age and size. Extremely solid, with great weight to size ratio. Beatiful pastel lemon, with pale tan-ochre markings. The specimen was formerly with the renowned early Australian dealer Frank Rossack - a pioneer of the early modern era of Australian shell collecting, (and a great friend and mentor of myself during my formative years), and the original 1969 Rossack label accompanies the specimen. (Amongst a small circle of Victorian shell collectors, a Rossack label possesses immense charm, of the same import as a Clarkson label for South Australian shells.) A piece of Australian shell collecting history. Size: 108.4 mm (length). Grading: F++. Data: Off Albany, Western Australia, Australia; upon sand/rubble/reef substrate; 60-120 m; craypot; 1969. |
