Item | # 0002157488 | Family | Volutidae | Name | Ericusa sowerbyi - RARE 'BLACK' , (Kiener, 1839) |
Size | 174.3 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | The famous 'BLACK' sowerbyi, much prized amongst Australian Volutidae collectors. Such rare examples are often referred to as 'melanistic', although the exterior colour is not true melansim, produced by pigment secreted by the animal, but is caused by extreme substrate influence. Reminiscent of burnished mahogany. One light axial growth disruption to body whorl. Perfect, fully mature, thickened, 'rolled' and glossed outer apertural lip. Nothing but the tiniest loss to siphonal canal. Mammillate protoconch intact. Now obtainable only from choice old collections. Definitely for the Volutidae specialist whose collection yet lacks an example of 'black' sowerbyi. Size: 174.3 mm (length). Grading: F++ Data: Off Portland, Victoria, Australia; upon dark sand/silt substrate; 40-80 m; craypot; 1977. |
