Item | # 0002157487 | Family | Cassidae | Name | Cassis fimbriata - 135.3 mm GIANT , Quoy & Gaimard, 1833 |
Size | 135.3 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | An incredible giant of this endemic southern Australian species. Very rare perfection of greatly thickened, 'rolled' and glossed outer apertural lip and columellar shield, and only the tiniest loss at the siphonal canal. Mammillate protoconch intact. Light erosion to dorsum, invariably present in such monumental, old age examples. Ultra-solid, with great weight to size ratio. When the species attains this size, (virtually the species limit), the exterior pattern disappears, and the shell exhibits only undecorated shades of pale purplish burgundy. Creamy ivory ventrum and shield, with accents of cinnamon. Definitely for the Cassidae specialist or collector of giant sized shells. Note: To provide adequate protection in a very large parcel, I will round down postage for this specimen to 35 EUR to anywhere in the world. Size: 135.3 mm (length). Grading: F+++. Data: Off Kingston SE, South Australia, Australia; upon sand substrate; 40-80 m; craypot; 1984. |
