Item | # 0002157484 | Family | Conidae | Name | Conus anemone - GIANT APOLLO BAY FORM , Lamarck, 1810 |
Size | 69.3 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | A population of truly giant anemone once existed at Apollo Bay, Victoria, (now probably extinct), which produced the largest examples of the nominate subspecies ever to have existed, some of which approach the size of C. anemone peronianus, (the giant, deep-water South Australian form), and with which it constitutes an intermediate. I only ever had two specimens of this giant form, (the other having been sold in a previous auction), and I have seen no other examples of this form upon the local market for over two decades, and none upon the international market. Thus, it is a poorly understood form, scantly represented within the collections of the world. Its colours are reminiscent of anemone peronianus, transmuted into slightly darker hues, (another indication of its intermediacy). Dusky lavender, with markings of reddish ochre. Such specimens were obtained via craypots in the ‘old days’ of collecting, and, being a reef-dwelling form, much prone to predation and strong tidal swells, have evolved a rugged, heavy shell. A 'last chance' for a Condiae specialist to acquire a virtually 70 mm specimen of this little known and extremely difficult to obtain form. Size: 69.3 mm (length). Grading: F++. Data: Henty Reef, Apollo Bay, Victoria, Australia; upon rock reef substrate; 20-40 m; craypot; 1972. |
