Item | # 0002152837 | Family | Volutidae | Name | Cymbiolista hunteri - RARE HEAVY NODED FORM , Iredale, 1931 |
Size | 121.6 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | This highly unusual specimen, the ONLY one I have to offer of this form, exhibits an atypically solid shell; a markedly broad form, with wide aperture; a densely formed pattern of spiral bands; and, most distinctive of all, ultra-developed, elongate peripheral nodes of the same nature as those upon certain subfossil examples trawled off Queensland during the 1980s. Perhaps the current specimen represents a surviving population of this ancient form, existing in the deep-water towards the southern end of the species range? Restricted loss to anterior of outer apertural lip, but otherwise exemplary quality for this usually rough species. Atypically dark apertural interior. Definitely for the advanced Volutidae specialist, for additional research upon this rare form. Size: 121.6 mm (length). Grading: F+++. Data: Off Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia; upon sand/mud substrate; 100-140 m; trawled; 1982. |
