NameTripterotyphis robustus - ULTRA-RARE; THE BEST , Verco, 1895
Size8.6 mm, w/o
LocalityAustralia
NoteNOTE: Special sales dispersing exceptional specimens from my private collection, along with highlights from my high quality stock, will continue indefinitely, without this initial notice. TRIPTEROTYPHIS ROBUSTUS: Far smaller and far rarer than Prototyphis angasi, this elusive endemic southern Australian species lives amongst the encrustations upon the exterior of deep-water trawled species such as Spondylus tenellus, Chlamys bifrons, etc. Upon account of its diminutive size and inherent scarcity, few specimens were found, as, firstly, the oysters and scallops, being a commercial product, were never searched, and secondly, the species is extremely difficult to find, even when its host is examined. The only other method of obtaining this species was deep diving, and the only diver I believe to ever have found this tiny species was the late Peter Clarkson - the collector of the current specimen, (although no original Clarkson label accompanies the specimen, as it was acquired from Clarkson amongst a group of Typhis from the same locality). This is a rare live-collected specimen of the highest possible quality, expertly cleaned by Clarkson, and for which he has also taken the pains to retain and mount the miniscule operculum! With the ever-increasing discontinuation of commercial trawling of Spondylus and Pecten, it is unlikely that any fresh specimens will be available in future. A rare opportunity for the advanced Muricidae specialist to aquire a BEST of the best example of this virtually impossible to obtain species. Size: 8.6 mm (length). Grading: Gem. Data: Off Port Lincoln, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, Australia; upon coarse sand/gravel substrate; 28 m; dived; 1994. Provenance: 1. Peter Clarkson private collection, Port Lincoln; 2. JES private collection, Melbourne/London.
