Note | SPECIAL SALE - PART 8: Part eight of my current special sales comprised entirely of exceptional specimens from my private collection, representing highlights of my collecting and dealing career. Another opportunity to acquire outstanding and unique seashells from one of the world’s pre-eminent collections. CYPRAEA COMPTONI: A superb specimen. Pale chocolate dorsum. Russet ventrum. Hypermature labral margin. Note: The darker than usual ventral colour upon this form, often considered to be the distinguishing characteristic of trenberthae, was neither a diagnostic feature of Trenberth's original description, nor the reason for his proposal of the species name. In fact, the name trenberthae was introduced as a replacement for comptoni, in the erroneous assumption that true comptoni required a new name, due to a misunderstanding of collection locality, and a consequent misattribution of the type to Cypraea walkeri. Size: 18.8 mm (length). Grading: Gem. Data: Lacepede Bay, Kingston SE, South Australia, Australia; upon rock reef substrate, under slab amongst seaweed, at outer reef fringe during extreme seasonal low tide; 1984. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
