Note | SPECIAL SALE - PART 8: Part eight of my current special sales comprised entirely of exceptional specimens from my private collection, representing highlights of my collecting and dealing career. Another opportunity to acquire outstanding and unique seashells from one of the world’s pre-eminent collections. CYPRAEA REEVEI BISHOPI: This is the third and last specimen I have to offer of this rare, recently described subspecies. Although a handful of examples of this rare form have been known to certain collectors for some years, it was only formally described in 2017, (The Festivus; Vol.49; Issue 1; pp.45-47). The subspecies is known only from extremely deep water in the Great Australian Bight, being only obtained via trawling. According to the original description, this form differs from the nominate subspecies in six distinct ways: ‘1. ... thinner, more delicate shell; 2. ... much more inflated and globular shell; 3. ... higher and more domed dorsum; 4. ... much lighter shell colour; 5. ... much paler extremities; 6. ... proportionally much larger and much better developed fossula’. I should like to add a further diagnostic feature, which appears constant throughout the specimens I have handled, that of a pure white ventrum, onto which virtually no marginal nor terminal colour extends. For a discussion of this subspecies, see my article in the latest edition of Beautiful Cowries Magazine (No.9; October 2018; p.79). Exceptional quality. Pronounced dorsal malleation, indicative of complete maturity. With trawling activity in the Great Australian Bight now greatly restricted, it is unlikely that fresh specimens will be obtained in future. Definitely for the advanced Cypraeidae specialist who wishes to secure a BEST of the best specimen of this rare form. Size: 31.9 mm (length). Grading: Gem. Data: Due South of Eucla, Great Australian Bight, Western Australia, Australia; upon sand/sponge substrate; trawled; 145-300 m; 1995. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
