Name | Zoila jeaniana aurata - Stunning Fresh Shell !!! , Raybaudi, 1979 |
Size | 82.2 mm |
Locality | Coral Bay, WA |
Note | Very broad humped shell collected from a sponge in 178 metres of water off Coral Bay. Lovely fresh tan color and heavy flared base. Our work with the ROV has lead me to believe that aurata should have full species status. This is based on the observation that there is little inter-grade between jeaniana and aurata. In the depth range 110 to 130 metres the change is abrupt. While they both predate on sponges jeaniana is a reef dweller while aurata is a sand dweller. Jeaniana show huge color variation whilst aurata shows little variation. When found in proximity to each other aurata is consistently larger and shows little inter-grade. One morphological difference is that aurata has no ziczag embryonic pattern whereas the entire friendii group does including kostini. I think that aurata like decipiens is an ancient relative of friendii but has been isolated from friendii for some very considerable period in the past. I am of the opinion that jeaniana may be a northward migration of the southern friendii complex that has recolonized the Dirk Hartog Shelf at some time in the past. This shell I grade at Fine+++/Gem- as it has a small growth scar on the anterior dorsum as indicated by the green arrow. |
